The World Congress of Epidemiology, scheduled to be held in Melbourne during September 2020, will be held as a virtual event in 2021. The dates are Friday 3 Monday 6 September 2021 inclusive.
Abstract submissions for WCE 2021 has now closed.
If you submitted an abstract for WCE 2020 and had it accepted for presentation, you will be asked to confirm that you wish to proceed with the presentation. You will be able to update the abstract provided substantial changes are not made to it.
If you decide to change a previously submitted abstract, or submit a new one, it will be treated as a new submission.
Abstracts relating to any aspect of epidemiology are welcome. Those that have relevance to the congress themes are strongly encouraged, as are those dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic and response.
The main theme is Methodological Innovations in Epidemiology, embracing innovation in areas as diverse as theoretical epidemiology, adapting from other disciplines (e.g. econometrics) data collection methods, and more.
There are three sub-themes as follows. Further detail on the sub-themes is provided in the abstract submission guidelines.
- Teaching and communicating epidemiology and bio-statistics
- Translation from research to policy and practice
- Career development for Early to Mid-Career Epidemiologists
IMPORTANT: all abstract submissions must strictly follow an official abstract submission template. Submissions that do not follow these instructions will not be reviewed.
Congress Awards
A large number of Congress awards will be available, including for delegates from Low to Middle Income Countries, Early Career Researchers, AEA members, IEA Western Pacific Region members and others. All awards will provide a waiver of the registration fee and of the fee of attending one (1) half-day short course. Successful applicants will be chosen on merit, based on:
- review of an abstract for which they are a contributing author (and supported by a written statement detailing the important role the applicant played in the work reported in the abstract if the applicant is not the first/presenting author), or
- appraisal of a narrative written application to request a Congress Award without presenting at the conference. The application should use the Abstract Template (up to 250 words) to outline their personal circumstances, and explain how obtaining a bursary to participate in the conference will assist their professional development.

- Abstracts (excluding title) must not exceed 250 words (presentations and posters), 2000 words (early career workshop) or 1000 words (symposia). Text in excess of those limits will be excluded.
- Presenting authors must register for the congress either by paying registration fees or being awarded a bursary.
- The review process is blind so please DO NOT include your name or affiliation on your abstract

IMPORTANT: all submissions must strictly follow the official submission guidelines and official submission template. Submissions that do not follow these instructions will be rejected.
Abstract submission important notes
- Please ensure that you have carefully read the abstract submission guidelines prior to submitting your abstract.
- Once you have submitted your work you will not be able to make any edits. You can only edit your submission while it is in draft format.
- All abstracts must be submitted using the provided official templates.
- Abstracts submitted for presentation (excluding non-presenting Award recipients) may be published exactly as received and should be checked for spelling and grammar prior to submission.
- The presenting author will be identified during the abstract submission process. All correspondence will be conducted with the presenting author.
- Presenting authors must register for the congress either by paying registration fees or being awarded a bursary.
- If the project involves members of an indigenous population, we expect that at least one of the authors identifies as indigenous.
- All abstract submissions must be submitted by no later than midnight AEST, Friday 28 May 2021.
Abstract submission terms and conditions
By submitting an abstract all authors agree to the below terms and conditions.
- The work described in the abstract is the original work of the authors.
- The work described in the abstract does not conflict with any existing copyright agreements with alternate publishers.
- The work described in the abstract has appropriate approval under local requirements and human and animal experimentation ethics rules.
- A presenting author may submit more than one abstract, but a maximum of one abstract per presenting author will be selected for long or snapshot presentation;
- If the abstract is accepted as a presentation or poster, the presenting author will register and pay registration fees to attend WCE2021.
- If the abstract is accepted as a symposium, all presenters will register and pay registration fees to attend WCE2021.
- Submission of an abstract implies the agreement of all authors to the publication of the abstract in the Congress program, and for any video/audio recordings taken during your presentation to be used and published by WCE2021, including provision of these materials to WCE2021 delegates.
